Free and Faster Wi-Fi at our Boston Convention Centers!

The Massachusetts Convention Center Authority (MCCA) has approved a major upgrade to the networks at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center (BCEC) and the Hynes Convention Center.

The upgrades to the wide-area network at both facilities will have a 10-gigabit capacity per second, replacing an eight-year-old system. The MCCA’s CIO, Steve Snyder, said, “The upgrade is like going from a moped to a Formula 1 racer.” The new system will be available in spring 2013, and the wireless service to both the BCEC and the Hynes will continue to be offered for free.

Snyder said in an interview with IT World, “One of our core competitive advantages has been a very attractive IT service—Wi-Fi, which typically comes at a cost in other convention centers. In 2005, the MCCA decided to provide it to our attendees for free. This boosted our competitive edge over other facilities and promoted our mission of being the most technologically advanced facility in the world. Our team saw usage rates rise from 1-2% to 50-70% depending on the show demographic.”

The convention industry is seeing a huge increase in demand for network connectivity in recent years. At the MCCA alone, events like the PAX East video game convention have seen between 80,000 to 100,000 data connections per hour on the wireless infrastructure at the BCEC. "We live in a wireless world," said Snyder, "and by improving our network for events and attendees, we help one and all focus on connecting."

The BCEC and Hynes deliver the most advanced technology services of any convention facilities in the world and include, in addition to free Wi-Fi, state-of-the-art networking, building-wide cell phone coverage, teleconferencing and videoconferencing. Our own on-site team of professionals will manage all your technological needs.
